How to Calculate Rebate Based on Spread Percentage

Each forex broker may use a different method to calculate rebates or commissions paid to Introducing Brokers (IBs). Depending on the broker and account type, the rebate may be calculated as a fixed amount per lot, a percentage of the trading commission, or a percentage of the spread charged when an order is opened or closed.

For accounts where the rebate is calculated based on the spread percentage, the final rebate amount depends on the actual spread applied to each trade. The wider the spread, the higher the rebate may be, while a lower spread may result in a smaller rebate.

Example of Rebate Calculation Based on Spread Percentage

Suppose the spread when opening an order is 2 pips (equivalent to 20 points on a 5-digit pricing system), and the broker offers a rebate equal to 20% of the spread.

The rebate in pips would be calculated as follows:

20% × 2 pips = 0.4 pips

This means that the trader receives a rebate equivalent to 0.4 pips for the eligible trade.

Converting the Rebate from Pips to USD

To estimate the forex rebate in USD, the pip value must be calculated based on the contract size or lot size of the trading account. For common USD-quoted currency pairs, the calculation can be illustrated as follows:

  • Micro Lot – Contract size of 1,000 units
Approximate pip value: $0.10 per pip.
    $0.10 × 0.4 pips = $0.04 rebate per lot.
  • Mini Lot – Contract size of 10,000 units
Approximate pip value: $1 per pip.
    $1 × 0.4 pips = $0.40 rebate per lot.
  • Standard Lot – Contract size of 100,000 units
Approximate pip value: $10 per pip.
    $10 × 0.4 pips = $4 rebate per lot.

Why Can the Rebate Amount Be Different for Each Trade?

For account types that use floating spreads, the rebate received for each order may vary even when the same trading volume or number of lots is used. This is because market spreads can change depending on liquidity, volatility, trading sessions, market conditions, and the financial instrument being traded.

Therefore, rebate amounts calculated using a percentage of the spread should be treated as estimates. The actual rebate credited to your account will depend on the spread applied to each eligible order and the rebate calculation method used by the broker.
